PRE-ORDERS, WEIRD ENDINGS, AND HORROR
Oct 29, 2024LIFE OF A BOOKMAN
Bookman: 1. a person who has a love of books and especially of reading. 2. a person who is involved in the writing, publishing, or selling of books. Oh, hi that's me!!
Finally done: In Ascension is over and I both raced to the finish and couldn't wait to be done. I wasn't obsessed? The story follows Leigh, a microbiologist, from the trenches of the Atlantic to far beyond our solar system. Let's just say that once I finished it, I spent a LOT of time on Reddit trying to understand the ending. My critique is that it was pretty slow and boring at times, and I didn't feel super connected to the author's characterization of Leigh's experience. I hate to even bring this up – because I believe we all can write outside of our own lived experience – but I kept having this recurring sense of “he's just not capturing what it's like for a woman on this journey”. AND, much of the writing is incredible and has stayed with me long after the final page. So maybe a challenging, slow-paced read was actually quite a good thing ;)
What I'm writing: TWO DAYS UNTIL YOU CAN PRE-ORDER THAT NOVEL. That's all. Stay tuned. Big reveals happening very sooooooon!!
WOMEN’S STUDIES
What gets passed down becomes our history. A few for the canon:
The ever amazing filmmaker Diane Robinson has her film, The Young Vote, airing on PBS Passport. Watch it! The WSJ just did a review of her film and what's at stake for young voters as they begin participating in American Politics.
Speaking of filmmakers, I saw The Substance at the Savannah Film Festival this weekend, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualey and directed by Coralie Faregeat. Demi and Margaret were there and did a Q+A after. The entire experience was both a huge win and a huge miss. Turns out this film about women, aging, beauty, and selfhood...was a satirical horror film. WHO KNEW!? Not me. So it was both the worst 2 hours ever (for me, I hate horror) and also such a fascinating piece of art with truly talented women at the helm.
PASS IT ON
Stories are heirlooms. Here's one of mine:
On my accidental “horror” filled weekend, I was also invited to get “stabbed in the woods” at the local comedy show, Front Porch Improv. Obviously I said yes. You can watch all three minutes of my riffing on “boomers” and dramatic stabbing on the stream (01:01:31). If you're ever in Savannah, Front Porch Improv is a must!!!
When I wasn't thinking about my imminent fake death this weekend, I was prepping all things PRE-ORDER of That Novel. Mark your calendars for 10 am ET this Thursday...I am so excited to finally tell you about this book, reveal the cover, and give you more details on the journey. There will be limited copies of this edition of the book, so keep an eye out for the release!!
